Arsenal face £27m transfer no-brainer after late offer as Mikel Arteta worst-case scenario clear

Arsenal could be about to change the perception of their summer transfer window, even though the window has now closed. Sporting director Andrea Berta has provided Mikel Arteta with eight new signings which, has resulted in over £250million being spent.

Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Cristhian Mosquera are the permanent arrivals with Piero Hincapie joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen on deadline day.

Also in the final 12 hours of the trading period, Jakub Kiwior, Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Sambi Lokonga were all moved on.

With the majority of their exits just being loan deals, Arsenal have failed to bring in any funds this summer. Leandro Trossard was one of their most sellable assets and despite links to Aston Villa and Brentford, he instead agreed to a new and improved contract.

A wage increase was given to the Belgium international, but his new deal still expires in 2027 which was also when his old contract would have ended. It was seemingly done to reflect his importance to the team and seemingly rule out any chance of a departure with Kai Havertz's injury also perhaps playing a role.

Despite that, and the window closing earlier this week, Trossard is still garnering interest with teams in Turkey and Saudi Arabia still able to sign players. According to Turkish outlet Sozcu, Besiktas have submitted a bid for Trossard with £19million (€22m) negotiations between club chiefs ongoing.

If this was the case roughly one month ago, it would make total sense for Arsenal to try and cash in but, now fresh contract terms have been agreed and Arsenal cannot sign a replacement, it would make no sense to sell.

While Trossard is likely third-choice off the left and up front behind Eberechi Eze, Gabriel Martinelli, Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz, injuries and Arsenal competing in four competitions means he will have a part to play.

Bukayo Saka, Ben White, William Saliba, Norgaard and Havertz have all picked up issues already this campaign, which showcases the need for adequate squad depth. Trossard departing would likely cost Arsenal in the long-term especially seeing how many attacking injury blows Arteta was handed last season.

The only way it would actually be worth Arsenal sanctioning his exit would be if a mammoth bid came in from the Saudi Pro League.

Regardless of the fact he turns 31 in just a few months, recouping all of the £27million paid to Brighton for his services back in January 2023 would be the minimum requirement.

To actually consider accepting an offer, a proposal in the region of £40million could do the job but it would place extra pressure on the likes of Martinelli, Eze, Gyokeres and likely Max Dowman, as well.
