The BJP on Monday announced P Venkata Satyanarayana as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election from Andhra Pradesh. Satyanarayana, 64, is a senior BJP leader from Bhimavaram in West Godavari district and has long-standing connections with the RSS.
In a press release, BJP national general secretary and party headquarters in-charge Arun Singh said, “The central election committee of the BJP has decided on one name (Satyanarayana) for the upcoming by-election to the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) from Andhra Pradesh.” This announcement revealed the NDA’s official candidate for the seat.
According to the BJP, Satyanarayana is a lawyer by profession and has held several key positions within the party in Bhimavaram. He also served as the vice president of the BJP’s Andhra Pradesh unit between 2018 and 2021. At present, he is the chairman of the party’s state disciplinary committee.
Satyanarayana was also part of the BJP’s manifesto drafting committee for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana during the 2014 elections. Additionally, he contested the 1996 Parliamentary elections from the Narasapuram constituency.
The by-election became necessary after former YSRCP leader V Vijayasai Reddy resigned from the Rajya Sabha.
Andhra Pradesh BJP leader Pathuri Nagabhushanam told PTI that with Satyanarayana’s election, the BJP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh will rise to two. The other BJP Rajya Sabha member from the state is BC leader R Krishnaiah.
