Edgbaston Test: As Bumrah dilemma widens, India can bet on Kuldeep's wrist magic, suggests ex-India coach

As India prepare to face England in the second Test at Edgbaston starting July 2, speculation over the playing XI is heating up.

After a five-wicket defeat in Leeds, questions are swirling around Jasprit Bumrah’s availability, Kuldeep Yadav’s potential return, and possible shake-ups in the bowling unit.

Bumrah, who bowled 44 overs across two innings in the first Test and took a five-wicket haul in the first, may be rested as part of workload management. The team management had earlier indicated he would play only three of the five Tests, but which ones remains uncertain.

Kuldeep Yadav’s omission from the series opener raised eyebrows. With the Birmingham pitch expected to offer turn, his inclusion is now under serious consideration.

“Kis tarah se hum Kuldeep Yadav ko team la sakte hain,” former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar said on Star Sports. “The team will have to give some thought to how we can bring Kuldeep Yadav into the XI, because judging by the approach we saw from the England batters in the first Test, Kuldeep — who bowls wrist spin — could be effective. Historically, England’s batters haven’t played wrist spin particularly well. So that is definitely something worth considering.”

Former India batter Subramaniam Badrinath believes the team could make two changes in the bowling attack.

“I think one change could be replacing Shardul — I’d definitely look to include a bowler. And maybe instead of Prasidh Krishna, I’d look to add some variety. So probably, my changes would be Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav coming into the XI. But then again, the final XI will depend on the conditions,” Badrinath said.

The five-Test series, part of the World Test Championship cycle, began with the Leeds Test from June 20 to 24. England lead 1-0. The second Test begins at Edgbaston on July 2, followed by matches at Lord’s (July 10–14), Old Trafford (July 23–27), and The Oval (July 31–August 4).

As fans await the team sheet, the big question remains: Will Bumrah sit out, and will India finally unleash Kuldeep?
