Mary Kom's divorce with Onkholer Kom confirmed: Boxer responds to affair allegations in legal statement

Olympic bronze medallist and six-time world champion boxer M.C. Mary Kom has officially confirmed her divorce from her husband Onkholer Kom, popularly known as Onler. In a legal statement shared on her social media on April 30, 2025, Kom clarified that the couple had legally separated on December 20, 2023. The proceedings took place in accordance with Kom customary law, in the presence of both families and community leaders acting as adjudicating authorities.

“In the light of these speculative and incorrect media reports, I wish to issue the following clarifications: Ms. M.C. Mary Kom and Mr. Onkholer (Onler) Kom are no longer married and they have finalized their divorce by mutual consent under KOM CUSTOMARY LAW on December 20 2023, in the presence of both family members and leaders of the clan as the adjudicating authorities," read the official statement.

False Affair Claims Addressed
The announcement comes after a wave of speculation on social media linking Mary Kom to Hitesh Choudhary, who is the chairman of the Mary Kom Boxing Foundation and her business associate. Reports also claimed she was involved with another boxer’s husband. Kom has firmly denied these allegations, labelling them as unfounded and misleading.

“The rumours regarding my client’s relationship involvement with Mr. Hitesh Choudhary or being in a relationship with another boxer’s husband, are categorically denied and should not be propagated by any media platform,” the legal statement added.

Mary Kom’s legal representative stated that there is no romantic involvement with Choudhary and emphasized that their relationship remains strictly professional. The statement also addressed speculation stemming from images that surfaced online, asserting that these were being misinterpreted and taken out of context.

Privacy Request Amid Personal Struggles

Over the last two years, Kom has reportedly endured a difficult phase in her personal life related to her marriage. The legal notice mentioned that the athlete does not wish to further comment on her past marriage and has moved on following the separation.

“Over the past two years, my client has been going through a deeply challenging time in her personal life, especially with her ex-husband. During this difficult hour, my client requests her friends, fans, and well-wishers to kindly give her the space and privacy she needs to navigate this difficult time. This notice serves as a formal request for all media entities, in all forms, to refrain from making baseless speculations about my client,” the statement noted.

Legal Consequences for Unfounded Reports

The legal document also included a warning to media outlets and individuals propagating these claims. It stated that any continued publication of false reports could lead to legal consequences, including defamation suits under both civil and criminal laws.

“It is imperative that the media respects Mary Kom’s privacy and personal space. One press conference at Manipur has already been done to this effect. Failure to comply with these requests will prompt legal action against those who violate this notice, including but not limited to claims of defamation both civil and criminal and breaches of privacy rights as per applicable laws," the notice concluded.

Through this statement, Mary Kom has sought to bring clarity to the situation and appealed for public and media restraint, urging respect for her privacy during a sensitive period.
