Bengaluru’s brush with relentless rain shows no signs of abating on anytime soon with the showers are expected to continue on Tuesday as the city reels under the impact of intense pre-monsoon rains. Meanwhile, the IMD has now extended its rainfall forecast through Sunday, May 25, adding three more days to the earlier alert that was initially set to end on Thursday.
Following a deluge over the weekend that persisted into the week, the Karnataka capital city received 130 mm of rain in just 12 hours from Sunday evening to early Monday morning — the second-highest rainfall in a decade, according to officials.

The resulting havoc left three dead, over 500 homes flooded, 20-plus lakes at overflow risk, and major underpasses submerged. Several arterial roads turned into rivers, halting traffic, suspending BMTC bus services, and stranding commuters across the city.
Among the deceased were Shashikala D (32), a sweeper who died when a compound wall collapsed in Whitefield, and a 63-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy who were electrocuted while attempting to pump water out of their flooded portico in south Bengaluru.
Tech corridors like Koramangala, BTM Layout, HSR Layout, and Marathahalli were among the worst affected, as knee-deep water inundated streets, offices, and homes, bringing daily life to a grinding halt.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had initally issued a yellow alert for 23 districts across Karnataka, including Bengaluru, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 60 km/h.
Civic bodies on high alert
In response, BBMP, traffic police, and other civic authorities have ramped up emergency measures. Zonal Commissioner (East) R. Snehal confirmed the deployment of water-pumping machines in flood-prone zones.
On the other hand, DCP (Traffic-East) Sahil Bagla stated teams are ready to tackle tree falls and road blockages, and DCP (Traffic-North) Siri Gowri DR said known waterlogging hotspots have been flagged for immediate intervention.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who also oversees the city’s development, acknowledged the crisis and said all efforts for permanent solution are being looked into. "The issues we face today have been ignored for years across governments. The only difference now is we’re working to solve them — not with temporary fixes but with long-term, sustainable solutions," he said.
What's causing the Bengalure deluge?
The IMD attributes the ongoing weather chaos to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, combined with a trough stretching from Telangana to north Tamil Nadu.

This system is drawing heavy moisture into southern India, setting the stage for continued downpours across Karnataka, especially in the Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Kolar, Tumakuru, Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Kodagu, and Belagavi districts.
