During the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston on July 2, England pacer Brydon Carse attempted a rather unusual strategy to unsettle Indian captain Shubman Gill, but the clever ploy fell flat. The moment sparked both amusement and confusion as Carse’s distraction attempts failed to shake Gill’s concentration.
The incident occurred during the 34th over of India's innings. After Yashasvi Jaiswal took a single to rotate the strike, Carse prepared to deliver the next ball to Gill. But instead of sticking to a standard run-up, the English bowler made a sudden gesture with his left hand by stretching it out and pointing to his left, seemingly trying to mislead or confuse the batter. Sensing the oddity, Shubman Gill wisely pulled out of his stance just in time.

Carse, looking confused, gestured toward Gill as if he didn’t understand why the batter had withdrawn. But Gill remained unfazed. On the very next delivery, Carse didn’t hold back from trying another quirky move, he stuck his tongue out while running in to bowl and then struck Gill on the pads. England appealed immediately, but the on-field umpire turned it down. The visitors opted for a DRS review, hoping for a breakthrough.
However, the review showed a clear inside edge off Gill’s bat, and the appeal was denied once again. Carse’s back-to-back mind games ultimately proved ineffective against the calm and composed Indian skipper.
The moment has since gone viral, with fans and commentators alike enjoying the light-hearted attempt at gamesmanship. But Shubman Gill’s calm reaction and alertness under pressure stood out, highlighting his growing maturity as a leader in the Indian team.
'It Should Be Taken Out...': Ravi Shastri Slams Decision To Rest Jasprit Bumrah For IND Vs ENG 2nd Test; Video
Former India coach Ravi Shastri has criticised the decision to rest fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test match against England at Edgbaston. India are currently trailing 0-1 in the five-match series, and Shastri believes this game is too important to leave Bumrah out.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Shastri said he was surprised by the decision, especially since there was a full week’s break after the first Test. He also said that decisions like this shouldn’t be left to players alone.

"This is a very important match, they’ve had a week off. I’m little surprised Bumrah is not playing this game. It should be taken out of the player’s hand. It should be the captain and the coaching staff that should decide who should be playing the 11. This is an important game in the context of the series, he should be playing this game," said Shastri.
The current team management, under new coach Gautam Gambhir, is trying to manage Bumrah’s workload because of his past injuries. They want him to play only three Tests in the series. But Shastri warned that not playing him now could put India at risk of going 0-2 down.
Many fans and former cricketers have also questioned the decision. With tough matches ahead, not having Bumrah in this key game has become a hot topic of debate.
