Navi Mumbai News: Citizens, Environmentalists Protest Illegal Debris Dumping At Nerul's Lotus Lake, Submit Letters To CM Devendra Fadnavis Seeking CIDCO Action

Navi Mumbai: On the fifth consecutive Sunday, over 70 to 80 environmentally conscious citizens gathered at Lotus Lake in Sector 27, Nerul, continuing their peaceful campaign to protect the vital wetland from further degradation. The weekly demonstrations, which have steadily gained momentum, aim to hold CIDCO accountable for removing dumped debris and preserving the ecological health of the lake.

Senior members of the movement including activist Sunil Agarwal, Shruti Agarwal, Adv Pradeep Patole, former corporator Saluja Sutar, briefed new participants on the ecological importance of Lotus Lake and the efforts already undertaken to conserve it. The lake, once celebrated for its natural biodiversity and tranquil surroundings, has been facing threats from illegal dumping and lack of protective measures, they said.

“Public support for the initiative is growing. Several housing societies in the vicinity have started issuing formal letters in support of the campaign. These letters will be submitted collectively to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra as part of a larger plea for government intervention to protect the lake,” Agarwal said.

A large number of college students from nearby institutions also joined the protest on Sunday, highlighting the deepening concern among the youth about environmental issues. Citizens marched around the lake and through Sector 27 holding placards and posters, interacting with fellow residents and urging them to join the movement.

“This isn’t just about one lake—it’s about standing up for nature and justice,” said one of the organisers. “Our wetlands are being neglected, and if we don’t act now, we may lose them forever.”
