As disturbing videos of glass shards and cockroaches in popular eateries in Pune continue to alarm citizens, the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) canteen is once again in the spotlight, this time for worm found in the food served at the refectory.
The SPPU Refectory, also known as the University Canteen, is one of the main dining facilities on campus. Located near the Departments of Sociology, Chemistry, and Physics, it serves meals at affordable prices and is intended to provide a clean and hygienic environment for students and staff. However, the refectory has faced ongoing concerns related to food quality and maintenance in recent times.
On the night of July 22, 2025, a worm was reportedly found in meals served to students, sparking outrage across the campus. This is not an isolated case, students allege such incidents have been happening repeatedly over the past year, but the university administration has shown no concrete action or accountability.
Frustrated students are now questioning whether the canteen committee, including its chairman and members, has been "managed" to ignore the growing hygiene concerns.
“This is about our health and dignity. How long will they keep turning a blind eye?” asked one student. The university has yet to release an official statement on the latest incident.
