In a treat for his fans, Aamir Khan announced at a fan meet in Mumbai on Monday that his cult film, Taare Zameen Par, will stream on YouTube for free soon. This comes amid rumours that the actor has decided to not release his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par, on any OTT platform, and instead, drop it on YouTube with the pay-per-view model.
During the event, the host stated that he wanted to show a particular scene from Taare Zameen Par during the fan meet, but he could not as the film was not avaiable online anywhere. Acknowledging the same, Aamir responded, "Let's do one thing. I have started a YouTube channel called Aamir Khan Talkies. I’ll tell my team that let’s upload Taare Zameen Par there free of cost. It can be available for 1–2 weeks."
The announcement sent his fans into a tizzy. However, the actor has not announced the official date when Taare Zameen Par will start streaming on YouTube.
This comes amid reports that Aamir has decided to opt for YouTube's pay-per-view model for his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par, when it releases online after its theatrical run. While the actor is yet to issue a clarification on the same, he said on Raj Shamani's podcast that Sitaare Zameen Par will release only in theatres on June 20.
"Maine bohot saari theories padhi hain, alag-alag proposals aaye hain film ko release karne ke liye, par main sabko side mein rakh raha hoon, aur main sirf ek cheez pe dhyan de raha hoon — theatrical," he said.
He added that the current practice of releasing films on OTT platforms a few weeks after their theatrical release hampers their box office collection.
"Sitaare Zameen Par jo aayegi, sirf theatre mein aayegi. Mera belief cinema aur theatre mein hai, toh main wahi karunga," he averred.
