Psychology studies suggest if you often forget people's names after meeting them, it may not necessarily mean you have a poor memory.
There could be other reasons why you forget names shortly after an introduction - and these reasons are quite profound.
It might not be due to absentmindedness but could instead indicate certain personality traits such as introversion or being a 'big picture' thinker.

Psychology identifies seven traits that could explain why you struggle to remember someone's name after a recent introduction.
VegOut magazine has outlined the various factors that could cause a name to slip your mind - and the reasons are fascinating, reports the Express.
The magazine delves into the 'intriguing world of memory and personality', revealing some captivating insights on the topic.
According to the publication, one reason could be that you're an 'abstract thinker'. They report that 'abstract thinkers tend to focus more on ideas and concepts rather than details', which could cause someone's name to slip your mind as you concentrate on deeper complexities.
Next, VegOut magazine discusses the trait of being a 'big-picture person'. If you frequently forget names, you might be what psychologists refer to as a big-picture person.
Alternatively, you might be highly intelligent. The publication suggests that 'forgetting names could be an indicator of high intelligence'.
Their report explained: "Scientists believe that this might be because intelligent brains are better at discarding information that is not useful in order to focus on what really matters.
"So, if you're forgetting names, it's not necessarily a negative trait. It could just mean that your brain is efficiently sorting information, prioritizing meaningful data over less important details like names."
Another theory suggests you're highly empathetic and individuals with this characteristic are 'often more engaged in understanding and connecting with the emotions and experiences of others' - and they tend to concentrate on feelings rather than specifics such as names.
Alternatively, it's conceivable you could be an introvert who finds new social situations 'overwhelming'.
Introverts frequently find social encounters 'draining', VegOut reports, and this can make it 'difficult to remember details like names'.
Or, maybe you are highly creative - and 'creative people often have minds that are buzzing with ideas, thoughts, and imaginations' meaning particulars like names 'can easily get lost' in your 'head full of ideas'.
Finally, it is a recognised widespread occurrence, so there's no reason to fret about it, perhaps for one or all of the reasons mentioned you struggle to get someone's name to stick, but so do countless people.
