Jamie Carragher's Anthony Gordon comments come back to haunt him in Trent Alexander-Arnold saga

Jamie Carragher has been left red-faced after old comments he made about Everton exit resurfaced - comments that appear to contradict his stance on

The Anfield legend recently defended fans upset over Alexander-Arnold's decision to leave the club at the end of the season, insisting that only those with "an affiliation" to the Reds have the right to judge their reaction.

But others were quick to call out the apparent double standard, digging up his 2024 criticism of for mocking Gordon, who'd left Goodison Park for a year earlier. On X, slammed the clip, published by the Toffees' official account, of Gordon's missed penalty in the 0-0 draw between the two sides in October.

"Local lad who came through your academy, helped keep you up under Lampard, wanted out because the club was a shambles on and off the pitch and who you then sold for 40m. The People's club," Carragher wrote, derisively.

After the post went viral, one fan responded: "Carragher shooting himself in the foot here. Is it one rule for Liverpool and another for everyone else in his mind?"

Another called him a "massive hypocrite", while a third joked: "Local lad who came through your academy, helped you win every trophy available, done everything and wanted to try something new at the biggest club on the planet booed coming on to the pitch and booed upon every touch he makes at Anfield. You'll Never Walk Alone!"

Following Alexander-Arnold's last week, Carragher launched about how neutral and rival supporters had no right to "tell Liverpool fans how to feel" following an explosive and emotional reaction to the news in the red half of Merseyside.

"I'm sick all day of reading about journalists, or other people who have got no affiliation to Liverpool, telling Liverpool supporters how they should feel," he said on "Liverpool as a city and as a football club is very emotional, that's what makes us what we are.

"Trent can do what he wants. It's his career. Fine. Good luck to him. But Liverpool supporters can also feel how they want about the situation."

That emotion was on full display as Alexander-Arnold made his first appearance since announcing his departure, during Sunday's 2-2 draw with at Anfield. As he entered the fray midway through the second half, around the ground, much to the astonishment of Carragher.

"I'm surprised how many [fans booed him]," the 47-year-old after the game. "When you're in a crowd of 60,000, there's no doubt there's a lot of unhappy people at Liverpool about the situation. And I've said that's understandable.

"But for me, I said it before the show and said the same away at where there were a few boos in the away section, I don't believe any player putting on that red shirt on going out there to get them three points or winning titles who goes on to win trophies should be being booed.

"I understand, there's a lot of ill-feeling. And some people outside of Liverpool won't be able to understand that. I do. Booing one of your own players while they're playing is not for me."

He added: "I think like me, the manager will be shocked at how vociferous it was. I think you can expect frustration but I think the best thing Liverpool supporters can do if does play another game for Liverpool, which I think that is up in the air. That might be his last performance.

"And that might actually be the right thing. Liverpool don't need a circus between now and the end of the season because this is the story of the game now. If you're frustrated with Trent, sign Conor Bradley's name, sing Steven Gerrard's name."

While many felt the reception Alexander-Arnold received was justified, given his decision to leave on a free transfer is denying Liverpool any financial compensation, others viewed the backlash as unwarranted and a betrayal of the club's You'll Never Walk Alone ethos.

In any case, the saga serves as a poignant reminder of the power of loyalty, identity, and emotion in football - and especially on Merseyside.
