Many of us have faced the challenge of buying unripe avocados and eagerly awaiting that perfect moment when they're ready to be enjoyed. Whether your avocados are still firm or perfectly ripe, proper storage is key to preserving their freshness for as long as possible.
Typically, avocados are stored on the kitchen counter, perhaps in a fruit bowl, or placed inside the refrigerator. However, neither of these methods alone will yield the best results.
A TikTok user known as @hidden.hollow.homestead has posted a video revealing a game-changing method to keep your avocados fresh in the fridge. The video's caption read: "Tired of avocados going bad too fast? Say goodbye to wasted avocados!"

It then went on to demonstrate the avocado hack: "If yours ripen and rot before you can even enjoy them, this simple trick will change your life. Just soak and wash them in vinegar, water, rinse and store [them] in water in the fridge. Over a week later and they're still fresh!"
While it may seem odd, giving avocados a bath in a mixture of vinegar and water can remove surface bacteria or contaminants, helping to prolong their edibility, reports .
The exact duration for soaking the avocados in the vinegar solution wasn't specified, but it is generally recommended not to exceed two to three minutes to avoid imparting a vinegary flavour to the fruit.
Once soaked, it's important to rinse the avocados well under running water to eliminate any traces of vinegar.
Despite the common belief that avocados should be stored dry to prevent bacterial and mould growth, the TikTok video suggested a different approach – storing them in a jar of water.
The reasoning behind this method is that avocados turn brown due to exposure to oxygen in the air, oxidising faster than other fruits because of their unique chemical composition.
However, when an avocado is stored in water, the flesh is shielded from the oxygen, thus reportedly preventing oxidation.
