Wasps won't go near your garden if you use 1p item they 'can't stand'

Summer is in full swing, sort of. For many of us, this means relishing the outdoors in a beer garden, firing up a BBQ, or gathering with loved ones.

However, this also signals the arrival of an unwelcome guest: wasps. While they're beneficial for flowers and gardens, they can be quite bothersome.

But don't fret, as pest control guru Adam Juson from Merlin Environmental has revealed his five budget-friendly and straightforward tricks to ward off wasps this summer, reports the Express.

The expert suggested: "Scattering 1p and 2p coins around your outdoor area, on the table and in plant pots, to deter these pests.

"Alternatively, you could pop a copper coin into a bag of water and hang it on door handles around your home and outdoor area to stop wasps from approaching."

Essential oils

"Citronella is a classic repellent and comes from lemongrass. It's most commonly added to candles which can be lit during al fresco meal times to boost the atmosphere and deter wasps," Adam explained.

Tea tree

He also offered another scent disliked by wasps, mentioning: "Tea tree is another scent that wasps hate but you might struggle to find a tea tree candle. Instead, place bowls of tea tree and water around your outside area and along your dinner table."

For other natural deterrents, Adam suggests: "Basil and garlic are two other scents that will naturally deter wasps. So consider placing pots of basil along your barbecue table. When it comes to garlic, you could either plan a garlic-infused spread or add to water and spray in areas that you don't want wasps to be attracted to."

Coffee powder

The trick is to simply place some coffee powder in a fire-proof dish and ignite it until the granules glow.

Adam explained: "The burning coffee powder emits smoke and scent that wasps can't tolerate. Don't stress about using fresh coffee - if you have a coffee machine, leftover grounds work just as well.

"Remember that the coffee grounds will become extremely hot so keep them out of reach of little ones! Speaking of smoke, nearly all smoke will unsettle wasps which means incense sticks are a fantastic addition to your outdoor gathering. Plus, they smell delightful too!"

When it comes to summer ensembles, Adam advises that wardrobe choices influence wasp behaviour, asserting: "Wasps are attracted to light and bright colours so choose muted or dark colours for your summer outfit.

"If you do want to wear something bright, then opt for red! Wasps can't see red so it's a safe choice!"

Paper bag

Adam even shares a simple yet effective trick to keep wasps at bay: "The paper bag trick."

He praises its efficacy with certainty: "Hang it nearby and wasps will think it's a rival hive and stay clear from the area. It sounds simple but it really works!".
