Collin Morikawa has admitted that sacking JJ Jakovac involved a difficult conversation with his caddie of six years. Earlier this week, the golfer surprised fans by .
Jakovac assisted Morikawa for all six of his PGA Tour wins and his two Major victories. They paired up after the American turned professional. However, Morikawa announced last week that they had gone their separate ways. He confessed that some things on the golf course did not "feel right", but thanked Jakovac for his work.
Speaking on Dan Rapaport's Dan On Golf YouTube channel, Morikawa said: "Well, it doesn't take away anything that JJ and I have done over the last six years. From the very beginning, he has caddied for me every single tournament. He skipped one tournament for the birth of a second boy.
"So I just want to first thank him because, like I said, you can't take away any of that. [With] what we accomplished, our relationship just doesn't go away because of what has just happened. Sometimes things aren't just feeling right.
"Everything looked good [but] sometimes, you know on the golf course things just don't feel right. It wasn't an easy talk and I hope all the best. I hope guys are lining up for him because, if you look at his resume [and] look at what we've done just simply over the past six years, it's incredible."
Morikawa quickly appointed Joe Greiner as his new caddie. Greiner previously caddied for Max Homa, and he stepped in to help out Justin Thomas during his RBC Heritage victory.
"We've already talked numerous times on how we're going to just get started. He's a great caddie. He's one of the best out there," Morikawa said ahead of linking up with Greiner. "Obviously, what he did with JT. JT is an amazing player and he is very, very talented."
At last month's Masters, Morikawa finished tied for 14th. He finished eight shots behind eventual winner Rory McIlroy and runner-up Justin Rose, who was beaten by the Northern Irishman in a tense play-off.
Morikawa headed straight to the RBC Heritage, where he failed to threaten the top of the leaderboard. The 28-year-old ended tied for 54th.
