David Mitchell and his wife Victoria Coren tied the knot in 2012 but he admitted things were not initially plain sailing for the couple. In an unearthed reveal the comedian, 51, opened up about the moment he received the "reluctant brush-off" which broke his heart before she became his wife. After meeting Victoria, 52, briefly at a drinks party in 2007, he met her again at a film premiere. He writes in his autobiography Back Story shared in the Guardian in 2018, "I changed then. Everything that happened to me after that moment, even incidental things, are in a different context, a new world where different things matter". The pair dated briefly and despite the on-screen star falling head over heels for her the timing was not on their side.
Victoria was dealing with the heart-wrenching loss of her father and began dating somebody else. He admitted that he told nobody about how dreadful he felt. "I didn't talk about the state of my life to my friends," he says. But had fallen hopelessly in love with Victoria.
In 2009, while David was grieving the loss of his relationship on Desert Island Discs Kirsty Young talked about Robert Webb becoming a father.
She asked David if he wanted that for himself and he said rather glumly, "I think I do," before adding, "I don't think I have an ideal woman."
But he had been keeping his heartbreak inside when indeed he knew had already met "the One".
Just a year later, Victoria returned to his life and suggested they try again with the couple tying the knot in 2012.

He told the Guardian: "I feel very lucky. If I had thought that [asking her to marry me] would not have seemed mad earlier, I would definitely have done it. I am just incredibly proud that someone like Victoria wants to be with me.
"She has these amazing qualities, but fundamentally, we clicked. I fell in love with her. Being with her, it's made me fundamentally more secure. A high percentage of the lurking terrors I felt for years, the things that I felt I'd failed to face up to as a proper human being, have gone."
David and Victoria are the proud parents of two children.
