Netflix fans have admitted to bingewatching the series in one day as the historical period drama left many hooked. Some may have missed it but this hidden gem was released on the streaming platform earlier this year to much fanfare. With an 89 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes viewers have confessed this is one drama not to be missed. The Lady's Companion tells the story of chaperone Elena Bianda (Nadia de Santiago), who is hired on a trial basis to find husbands for three wealthy sisters (Isa Montalbán's Cristina, Zoe Bonafonte's Sara and Iratxe Emparán as Carlota) in Madrid by their foreboding father, Don Pedro (Tristán Ulloa).
Despite her dismissal of fellow chaperones and frustrating family members, it soon becomes clear that Elena is also hiding from a past that comes back to bite her, with the audience drawn into a late 19th-century world of love, scandal and comic intrigue. There are also several potential suitors running around, causing chaos, including Álvaro Mel as Santiago, Iván Lapadula as Eduardo and Carloto Cotta as Gabriel.
The show also boasts several racy scenes and plenty of illicit affairs as one commentator raved: "It's absolutely bingeable and cheeky. The only thing I didn't like is the score, too obvious to look modern. Lavish period drama at it best."
Another penned: "Visually fabulous with interesting set designs and cinematography... the narration often breaking the fourth wall. Floral arrangements alone get their own star. Good acting and cast."
A third gushed: "Me and the wife could not stop laughing. We both agree they MUST not leave us hanging and bring it back for season 2."
"Fun to watch, I binged it in less than a week, which is very unusual for me. Great casting. Beautiful wardrobe and sets. Witty and fun with lots of twists," a fourth admitted.
A fifth added: "Love the cast, plot and character building."
With The Lady's Companion viewers may be diasppointed to learn that the series will not return.
Netflix confirmed in May that it had been cancelled after one season - despite its plot being shaped around a continuation and ending on a cliff-hanger.
The Lady's Companion is streaming now on Netflix internationally.
