Imagine how gutted you'd feel if your favourite item of clothing was ruined in the washing machine, because you had absolutely no clue that it wasn't supposed to go in there.
Well, consumer experts at Which? have shared that "you could save a favourite piece of clothing or a cherished stuffed toy" if you learn about what you should and shouldn't be putting in the washing machine.
First up, they warned that "anything with embellishments" should not be going into the drum, and instead, should be hand-washed according to the instructions.
This is because the "sequins, lace, or glitter" may not be able to survive the spin cycle, and you could be left with some of them falling off, or your lace going stringy.
Next was "suits and ties," because "even if your suit is made from cotton or polyester, the interfacing, which gives a structured shape in places like collars and cuffs can dissolve and bend out of shape in water". Ties are also "easy to shrink or damage".
They then recommended that "anything with suede, leather, fur, velvet, or rayon" should never be put into the washing machine.
They explained that "these fabrics are better off going to the dry cleaners as they'll only get damaged in the washing machine".
Then, it was recommended that "some cuddly toys, including Jellycats and Beanie Babies" were not put into the washing machine.
It was suggested that you always check the label, but "certain brands of toys are hand wash only for the most part".
The final thing that you should avoid putting into the washing machine is "memory foam pillows".
This is because "the foam is delicate and can easily be torn during the washing process".
Which? then shared that if you're "unsure how to clean anything, always check the label or consult a dry cleaner".
In the comments, some shared that certain brands like M&S "are making washable at home suits" to make them more accessible.
Someone else said: "No. I chuck everything in. If it survives, great; If not it goes in the bin. It's survival of the fittest".
Another penned: "I've put embellished tops into the washer for years with no problem, as long as they're inside out, I've never had a problem."
