Rishabh Pant had to be ushered off the field in an ambulance buggy after suffering a nasty-looking injury during the opening day of the fourth Test between India and England. The superstar keeper-batter was forced out of action at Old Trafford in Manchester after Chris Woakes' fourth ball of the 68th over hit his right foot after a slight nick.

Pant opted for a reverse-sweep as he looked to improve his 37-run tally, but it did not go the plan, causing the ball to strike his foot. The 27-year-old looked in serious pain while grounded in the aftermath as he received medical attention before an ambulance buggy made its way onto the field.

Images showed that Pant's foot was bleeding and had instantly become swollen after he attempted to hobble it off with a grimace on his face.

England's competitive edge powered through as they appealed to the umpire to call Pant out. The Three Lions took the call upstairs but lost the appeal after replays showed the ball brushed his bat before his foot.

India did not get a positive outcome, though, as Pant could not continue and made way for Ravindra Jadeja in the middle.

At the time of Pant's injury, India were 212-3 after 68 overs as they look to level the five-match series ahead of the final Test at The Oval from July 31 to August 4.

England won the first Test at Headingley, triumphing by five wickets. India bounced back at Edgbaston, winning by 336 runs to tie the series.

But Lord's watched England come out on top in a thrilling battle earlier this month, winning by 22 runs.

India will hope that they will have Pant's services at The Oval, if not again in Manchester over the coming days.

Pant made history earlier in the first day, becoming the first visiting wicket-keeper to score 1,000 Test runs on English soil.

He is comfortably the record holder. Former India captain MS Dhoni is the next best in that metric, recording 778 runs in England.

The vice captain also became the sixth Indian batter overall to reach that feat, which he achieved with his 19th run of the day in Manchester.

Sachin Tendulkar (1575), Rahul Dravid (1376), Sunil Gavaskar (1152), Virat Kohli (1096), and KL Rahul (1035) make up the exclusive club.

Pant has been at it all series. He had earlier become the Indian keeper with the most Test centuries with his eighth, and is the only keeper to produce multiple Test centuries against England, with four.
