As warmer weather sweeps across the UK, an unexpected invasion is creeping into homes: ladybugs. The sudden surge in these otherwise garden-friendly insects has left many homeowners scratching their heads and looking for a home remedy
While ladybirds are loved by gardeners for keeping pests like aphids in check, they're far less welcome once they move indoors. According to pest prevention expert Chris Hutton, owner of Adams Selfstore, the boom in aphids this summer has triggered an increase in ladybirds, and they're following their food straight through windows and into lofts and storage spaces.
"The rise in aphids caused by this year's warm spell has led to a sharp increase in ladybirds," Chris said.
"They follow their food into our homes and storage spaces, especially as nights get cooler."
But instead of reaching for chemical sprays, there's a simpler, and greener, solution already sitting in your kitchen. You can use orange and lemon peels to keep these critters out.
"Ladybirds hate the strong smell of citrus," said Chris.
"Placing fresh peels near windows and doors will deter ladybirds from entering and avoid any food waste or the use of harmful chemicals."
The method is as easy as it sounds.
Just take fresh citrus peels and leave them by entry points like window sills, doorways, air vents, and attic spaces. Replace the peels every couple of days to maintain the scent and effectiveness.
The smell repels ladybirds naturally, without harming them or the environment.
To maximise protection, homeowners are also advised to seal any cracks or gaps around windows and frames, and keep storage areas clean and dry.
"Using citrus peel is a safe, effective, and eco-friendly way to stop ladybirds invading your home or storage unit," Chris adds. "It's a simple fix anyone can try, and it costs virtually nothing."
So next time you enjoy a lemon or orange, don't toss the peel, instead use it to keep your home ladybird-free.
