Robins are a beautiful UK native bird, and when they glide into view, their appearance pleases everyone. They are a cute sight in any garden, coming close to humans while they scout for something to eat. However, it can be difficult to know what will attract them to your garden.
Bird experts at Johnston & Jeff claimed that there's nothing like the promise of a good feed to "encourage birds to flock to your garden". However, to attract this species, you must provide the right type of food and make it available to them in the correct manner.
One thing that many people don't realise is that robins primarily feed on the ground. While they may visit bird tables, they are rarely, if ever, spotted at feeders.
Therefore, it is essential that you either use ground trays or scatter food on the ground for them to locate.
This feeding behaviour stems from their natural diet. In the wild, robins obtain most of their protein from insects, which is why they enjoy foraging on the forest floor, in fields, and in gardens for worms, beetles, and other small creatures that come their way.
This same behaviour has contributed to the robin's reputation for being quite tame around humans. They often follow individuals who are gardening, showing little to no fear, and can get surprisingly close.
This is because they have learned that when someone digs in the garden, worms are often unearthed, and trailing behind the gardener frequently leads to a delicious meal.
So what food attracts them the most? Due to insects making up the bulk of a robin's diet, the experts noted that "they can't resist dried mealworms".
One tip to make the worms "even more palatable" is to soak them in water, as this introduces valuable moisture into their diet.
The specialists behind Really Wild Bird Food agreed, claiming that "one sure fire way to get robins visiting your garden" is to offer mealworms as they "love the stuff".
