The pretty little island country that's the 'safest' in Africa

Africa is experiencing a boom in tourism, as enhanced infrastructure and better global connectivity make it easier for travellers to get to the continent. In recent years, the continent has attracted annually around 67 million international tourist arrivals, with Egypt one of the most popular destinations.

Africa's popularity is increasing due to its diverse offerings, including wildlife safaris, cultural experiences, historical sites, beaches and natural wonders. Campaigns and programmes to attract international visitors, such as the "Year of Return" initiative and the easing of visa restrictions, have also helped to boost numbers. One island that is increasingly drawing in visitors is Mauritius, which is located in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa and east of Madagascar.

Last year, a whopping 1.4 million tourists visited the island haven, a 6.7% increase from the previous year. This figure also surpassed the historic peak of 1.4 million arrivals recorded in 2018.

Mauritius, which has been named the safest country in Africa, topping the Global Peace Index in 2023, boasts gorgeous sandy beaches and pristine coral blue waters and offers travellers a distinctive blend of culture, cuisine and outdoor adventures.

Composed of a vast 2,000 square kilometre volcanic mass, the island is adorned with beaches, agricultural land and local towns in the north. In the south, travellers can find the lush slopes of La Morne Mountain and the stunning Black River Gorges National Park.

Unique flora carpets the island, including over 200 variations of palm trees and a rare ebony.

The island is a veritable playground for adventure-seekers, with scuba diving, kite surfing and hiking all easily available.

It also offers an eclectic blend of European, Indian and African cultures which contribute to a distinctive local experience and cuisine.

Arvind Bundhun, Director of the Tourism Promotion Authority, sees Mauritian culture as a major selling point.

"I believe our people make the difference," he said. "There are very few countries in the world where people come from different continents and live together harmoniously. Mauritius is a melting pot of culture, tradition, religion, festivities and gastronomy."
