The UK's bakery sector is large, thriving, and varied - from freshly baked goods to welcoming atmospheres and excellent customer service. With so many bakeries, deciding which truly stands out can be difficult. Thankfully, the National Bakery Awards have that covered by shining a light on the best bakehouses across the country.
The awards celebrate excellence in the industry, recognising outstanding bakeries and everything that makes them unique. This year's edition features 229 nominees, each aiming for the National Bakery of the Year crown. Among them, an impressive 87 bakeries hail from the South and East of England, spanning from Cornwall to Norfolk.
Kent and Somerset proudly have four bakeries that have bagged a spot on the county nominees list.
Kent's Grain and Hearth is no stranger to praise. It was named one of The Good Food Guide's top 50 greatest UK bakeries and described as an "easy-going bakery and cafe" with "cheery staff." It is also listed as one of Kent's top 10 bakehouses on TripAdvisor, with an admirable 4.3 rating out of five.
Over in the South West, Somerset also has its fair share of delicious pastry shops, including Burns the Bread, which also landed a special spot on TripAdvisor. The family business was first established in 1983, and it even has a School of Baking to ensure its craft remains perfect.
In addition to top-tier bakeries, the National Bakery Awards celebrates social enterprise bakeries and the geniuses behind them-the bakers themselves-with two special awards: Young Baker of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to Bakery.
The event will take place on November 25, but in the meantime, you can find 87 of the nominees below.
