NEW DELHI: A massive crater appeared in a field in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district after a loud explosion early Saturday morning
The blast left villagers stunned and authorities scrambling to investigate. The crater formed was about 35 feet wide and 15 feet deep.
The blast occurred in village Rajubela Chhichhran around 4.50 am.
“A big explosion took place at around 4:50 am. As a result, window panes of nearby houses were shattered,” said a resident.
No one was injured, but the blast caused damage to electrical wires in the area.
The explosion comes amid heightened tensions along Punjab’s western border. Security forces had just foiled multiple drone attacks and the use of long-range munitions launched from across the border in districts like Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, and Amritsar on Friday night.
In a separate but similar incident, another unidentified object crashed in a field between Khalyan and Sahni villages in Phagwara district around 2.40 am the same day. Locals reported hearing an “explosion-like sound” before discovering a crater roughly 7-8 feet deep and 12-14 feet wide in a field.
Parts of the projectile were found scattered across the field, and some wheat straw caught fire following the impact. Firefighters were able to control the blaze quickly. No injuries were reported.
Police cordoned off both sites and called in army officials to examine the debris. Authorities have advised people not to touch any suspicious objects and to alert the local police if they find any metal parts lying in open fields.
Additional deputy commissioner Akshita Gupta announced that all marketplaces, except medical stores, would remain closed in Phagwara city as a precaution. Malls and high-rise commercial buildings across the district were also ordered shut for the day.
Meanwhile, in Ferozepur, a projectile from a Pakistani drone that was shot down by Indian air defence yesterday crashed into a house in Khai Pheme Ke village. Three members of the family were injured in the incident. The falling object caused a fire that damaged the house and a car.
India has condemned Pakistan’s actions, stating that it continues targeting civilians and infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab.
Indian forces recently carried out precision strikes on terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalga, which killed 26 people.
