US President Donald Trump has cancelled the Secret Service protection that had been given to former vice president Kamala Harris by Joe Biden before leaving office, CNN reported.
As per US law, Harris was entitled to six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office in January. Biden had extended this protection for another year through an executive directive, but Trump revoked it in a memo.
The decision comes weeks before Harris begins a national book tour to promote "107 Days", her memoir about her 2024 presidential campaign.
According to the CNN, the letter directed the Secret Service to end the additional protection: "You are hereby authorized to discontinue any security-related procedures previously authorized by Executive Memorandum, beyond those required by law, for the following individual, effective September 1, 2025: Former vice president Kamala D Harris," the letter stated.
During his campaign last year, Trump faced two assassination attempts, highlighting the security risks for presidents and presidential candidates.
With the withdrawal of protection, Harris will no longer have agents assigned to her or her property in Los Angeles, nor will she receive the threat intelligence work carried out by the Secret Service to identify and prevent possible risks.
If arranged privately, similar security protection could cost millions of dollars annually.
