On Thursday, US President Donald Trump said that in the interim, Rubio will serve as national security advisor while continuing his strong leadership at the state department.
"I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role," Trump said in his Truth Social account.
" In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he added.
Earlier, reports came that Mike Waltz and several staff members have been dismissed from the national security council .
Fox News has confirmed that both Waltz and his deputy, Alex Wong, were removed from their positions on Thursday. Sources indicate that additional staff dismissals are anticipated, with President Donald Trump expected to address these changes publicly.
Waltz, a former Florida congressman and distinguished combat Green Beret, has faced criticism from Democrats since March, following The Atlantic magazine's Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg's publication of his personal account.
Goldberg detailed being included in a Signal group chat with senior national security officials, including Waltz, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, during their discussions about strikes against Yemen terrorists.
