WASHINGTON: senior official from the US Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the pardons and commutations issued by president Joe Biden during the final days of his term. The scope of the crackdown expanded, affecting many family members and dozens of prisoners.
In an internal e-mail seen by Reuters, Pardon Attorney Ed Martin said that the investigation would check the mental competency of Biden when the decisions were made, and whether others may have utilized him, possibly through the use of an autopen, a tool that automatically creates a signature replica.
While Trump's colleagues questioned the validity of the use of Autopen, suggesting that Biden was not aware of his actions, there is no public evidence that Biden used an autopen for forgiveness. A note from a 2005 Justice Department retained the use of Autopen for the first official presidential signature.
Biden, who is 82, gave forgiveness to five family members, including Bhai -Bahn James and Frank Biden, sister Valerie Biden Owens and his spouse -raised a desire to save them from politically motivated investigations. He also told the sentences of 37 Federal Death Row catches, and converted the judges into life -long prison.
The instructions for Martin's investigation are not clear, as what specific forgiveness is subject to probe. Neither the Ministry of Justice nor the White House made immediate comments.
Recently, after the diagnosis of cancer, Biden's health was examined and liberation of a book that revealed democratic concerns about his mental sharpness over the past year. Biden ended the election campaign last year after a much debated performance.
Despite this, colleagues have consistently defended their decision -making ability, and there is no evidence.
