In the recent Tamil film 'Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai', a mother loses her composure when her daughter introduces her same-sex partner at dinner. In contrast, Megha, portrayed by Zarna Garg in 'A Nice Indian Boy', embodies a more accepting attitude, albeit with a mix of warmth, curiosity, and apprehension. While she may not be a true liberal, she strives to be one. When her son Naveen (Karan Soni) brings his boyfriend Jay (Jonathan Groff) home, Megha greets him with the openness expected of a progressive Indian mother who prioritizes her son's happiness.
Life's complexities often complicate decisions, and Megha's journey to do the right thing makes her one of the most memorable mothers depicted on screen recently.
Unlike many conservative mothers who show no pretense of acceptance, Megha makes an effort. She deserves the title of Mom Of The Year for her attempts. Her husband, portrayed by Harish Patel, takes a more passive approach, choosing to align with Megha's liberal views regarding their son's same-sex marriage.
However, this passive acceptance does not resolve the underlying issues. One can foresee Naveen's father grappling with his son-in-law's role within the family in a potential sequel.
The supporting characters in this charming same-sex romantic comedy undergo transitions that feel abrupt and unconvincing. Naveen and Jay's connection, highlighted by their shared love for 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge', comes off as somewhat forced.
Would anyone genuinely fall for someone performing a full song from DDLJ on the street? Naveen does, not due to the performance but in spite of it, showcasing the unpredictable nature of love.
On screen, the chemistry between Naveen and Jay lacks depth, reminiscent of Fawad Khan's character's distant boyfriend in 'Kapoor & Sons'. Jay, while agreeable, appears shadowy and inconsistent, raising questions about his behavior, such as retreating to the bathroom to smoke weed during a family visit.
Jay's nervousness and the hostility from Naveen's aggressive sister, Arundhati (Sunita Mani), are acknowledged, yet he feels more like a character from a fantasy than a real person.
The film adopts a rose-tinted, fairytale-like perspective. Despite its flaws, it earns points for its good intentions.
Notably, this film marks a significant moment as it showcases two men getting married in a grand Indian wedding officiated by a Hindu priest, embodying true Bollywood flair. While 'A Nice Indian Boy' has its heart in the right place, advocating for the acceptance of homosexuality, it ultimately falls short of being fully convincing.
